GW Alumni Profile
Maggie Montgomery is a second year student in the IE program. She went with the GW cohort in 2018.
“My research focused on citizenship education in primary schools—how civics and history curriculum construct national identity and teach students how to be a Cuban citizen. In country, I completed an analysis of sixth-grade history and civics textbooks and conducted interviews with students, teachers, and school administrators about civics curriculum and what it means to be Cuban.
One piece of advice I have is to talk to everyone; approaching a teacher at a school visit allowed me access to her classroom to interview her students, and getting to know our translators provided me with so much information that helped me refine my interview questions for site visits.”
